20MPH for Ely

Liberal Democrat county councillors Piers Coutts and Alison Whelan are backing plans for an Ely-wide 20MPH speed limit. They believe that lower speeds would make Ely a safer and healthier place to live.

"We know that lower speeds mean fewer collisions, and fewer fatalities," says Piers. "We also know that 20MPH zones improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and can lead to healthier lifestyles with more walking and cycling."

Alison adds: "We're not suggesting that a 20MPH speed limit will solve all of Ely's traffic problems, but it's a step in the right direction. It will make our streets safer for everyone, from pedestrians and cyclists to children playing in the street."

A consultation on the proposal closes on Thursday 21 September. The consultation documents are available to view here.
